SONIC PRIME SEASON ONE REVIEW SPOILER FREE

One thing I noticed when rewatching Sonic Prime was how calm Shadow was with Sonic. He wasn’t really fighting except when attempting to get Sonic’s attention and keeping up with Sonic to explain things. The whole time Shadow was trying to talk to Sonic, even as he was getting more irritated, Shadow was holding himself back because whatever he realized, he know it was important enough that he needs to make sure Sonic understand too and even said at one point “you need to stop and listen for once”.

And after the shattering, Shadow was reasonably pissed but still trying to work things out. In fact, I think he was already grieving, but he was too focused on fixing the mess and it was only when he finally came face to face with Sonic again and saw how clueless he was that Shadow’s patience ran out and his anger finally caught up.

Just think that’s brilliant and actually portrays him more accurately than most of the recent games had. He wasn’t “always angry” or “doesn’t care”, Shadow cares about things deeply and has a clear understanding of his goals and/or tasks at hand, he just doesn’t show it outwardly a lot of the time. In SA2, when he just wanted to destroy Earth as revenge for his friend, he knows exactly what he’s doing every step of the way, and never revealed it.

WHAT IS THE PLOT OF SONIC PRIME?

He even tricked Dr. Eggman (who never even suspected) because sure, he’s angry but this isn’t a burst of emotion, but a persistent cold rage. And now in the show, Shadow priorities preventing a disaster/fixing reality and holding back his frustration even when he’s having a hard time processing it? That’s just wonderfully in character for him. Shadow is determined and devoted, and whether he shows it or not, he’s deeply sentimental and attached to his home and the things that matter to him.

All the recent games that just use him as some loner or morally grey character really don’t do him justice. Shadow can be so much more than that, he can be the backbone, the moral support, and unwavering compass in rough times, he can be the rational one keeping everyone on track and finding ways forward, heck he can even be the one taking the risk to save someone else from a dire situation.

The animation is VERY good all around though and the characters do resemble their video-game counterparts too. Sonic’s banter is similar to that seen in the latest feature movies while seeing the alternate versions of all these characters through the multiverse works to get the creative juices going – and they’re brought to life beautifully with some great dubbing.
